How to Install PVC Strip Curtains: Step-by-Step UK Guide
Installing PVC strip curtains is a straightforward DIY task that most people can complete in under an hour with basic tools. This guide walks you through everything you need.
What You'll Need
- Tape measure and spirit level
- Power drill with masonry or wood bits
- Rawl plugs (for masonry fixings)
- Screwdriver or impact driver
- Step ladder for high doorways
- PVC strip curtain kit (rail + strips)
Step 1: Measure Your Doorway
Measure width (clear opening) and height (top of opening to floor). For made-to-measure kits, provide these dimensions and strips will be cut to exact length. For standard lengths, choose the next size above your height and trim.
Step 2: Choose Your Rail System
Hook-On Rails (Recommended)
The most popular option. Individual strips hang from hooks in a continuous grooved rail. Strips removable individually for cleaning without tools. Browse our hook-on PVC curtain rails.
Quick-Mount Rails
Simplified system for fast installation and replacement. Best for lighter-duty applications.
Swivel Hinge Rails
Each strip pivots individually — ideal for forklift and vehicle access doorways.
Step 3: Decide Fixing Position
- Face-fix: Rail fixed to wall face above opening — most common method
- Ceiling-fix: Rail fixed to ceiling or overhead beam — where no solid face is available
Step 4: Fix the Rail
- Hold rail in position, mark fixing hole positions with a pencil
- Use spirit level to ensure the rail is horizontal
- Drill fixing holes — masonry bit + Rawl plugs for solid walls; wood screws for timber frames
- Fix rail with provided screws; check level again before tightening
- For wide openings, butt multiple rail sections together, ensuring slot profiles align
Step 5: Hang the Strips
- Insert first strip hook into the rail slot at one end
- Slide hook along rail to correct position
- Hang subsequent strips, overlapping each by 50% of strip width (e.g., 100mm for 200mm strips)
- Work across full opening width until all strips are hung
- Check strips hang vertically, bottom edges within 10–20mm of floor
Calculating Number of Strips
At 50% overlap, each 200mm strip advances coverage by 100mm — a 1000mm wide opening requires approximately 10 strips. Our made-to-measure kits include the correct number pre-cut.
Pro Tips
- Allow strips to hang 24 hours before checking alignment — packaging curl drops out naturally
- Trim from the bottom using a sharp knife and metal ruler
- In cold environments, allow strips to acclimatise before adjusting
