Why Welding Curtains Are Required
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and PUWER regulations, employers must protect workers not directly involved in welding from arc flash UV radiation and spatter hazards. Standard clear PVC provides no UV protection — welding grade PVC blocks harmful UV wavelengths and reduces spark transmission risk to surrounding areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is EN1598 certification for welding curtains?
EN1598 (and ISO25980) is the European standard specifying performance requirements for welding screens and curtains. It covers UV attenuation, luminous transmittance, impact resistance, and ignitability. Curtains certified to EN1598 have been independently tested to confirm adequate protection against optical radiation from welding arcs. Always request certification documents for your health and safety file.
Can standard PVC strip curtains be used around welding areas?
No — standard clear PVC transmits UV radiation and provides no protection against welding arc flash. Using standard PVC around active welding creates a serious eye and skin hazard for nearby workers. Standard PVC may also ignite from welding spatter. Only EN1598-certified welding grade PVC should be used within arc flash range of welding operations.
Are welding curtains fire resistant?
EN1598-certified curtains pass ignitability tests and will not sustain combustion from normal welding spatter. However they are not classified fire-resistant barriers and will not prevent fire spread under sustained ignition. For fire compartmentation, specialist fire curtains complying with EN13501 are required. Welding curtains are UV and spatter barriers, not fire barriers.
