How Long Do PVC Strip Curtains Last?
PVC strip curtains are a cost-effective doorway solution, but they require periodic replacement. Understanding typical lifespans, degradation causes and maintenance best practice helps you plan your budget and ensure your curtains remain effective.
Typical Lifespan by Application
- Pedestrian access, low traffic: 3–7 years
- Pedestrian access, high traffic: 1–3 years
- Forklift access (correct spec): 6 months to 2 years depending on cycle count
- External loading bay/agricultural: 1–3 years (UV exposure accelerates degradation)
- Cold room/freezer (polar grade): 2–5 years
- Food production (regular cleaning): 1–3 years
Signs Your Strips Need Replacing
- Yellowing or discolouration — UV degradation; indicates material breakdown
- Brittleness or cracking — especially in cold environments; plasticiser migration
- Permanent deformation — strips won't hang straight after being pushed
- Tears, holes or cuts — physical damage compromising barrier function
- Chemical contamination — paint or chemical build-up that cannot be cleaned off
- Hook damage — worn hooks that don't seat reliably in the rail
What Reduces PVC Strip Lifespan?
UV Exposure
The biggest cause of premature degradation. UV light breaks down PVC plasticisers, causing yellowing and brittleness. Outdoor and window-adjacent strips degrade fastest. Use UV-stabilised PVC grades for external applications.
Sub-Zero Temperatures
Standard PVC becomes brittle below -5°C. Always use polar-grade PVC in cold room and freezer applications.
Chemical Exposure
Aggressive cleaning agents and solvents extract plasticisers, causing stiffening. Use only compatible cleaning agents.
Incorrect Specification
Using 2mm strips where 4mm is required dramatically accelerates wear. See our full PVC strip curtain range for correct specifications.
Maintenance to Extend Lifespan
- Clean with warm water and mild detergent regularly
- Inspect monthly for damage and wear
- Replace individual damaged strips immediately
- Keep spare strips on site in the correct specification
Individual Strip vs Full Curtain Replacement
With hook-on rails, individual strips replace without disturbing the rest of the curtain. Consider full replacement when 20–30%+ of strips are degraded or the rail itself is damaged.
Purchase individual replacement strips from our PVC strip by the metre range, or in bulk from our PVC rolls collection.
Replacement Cost
Individual strips cost from a few pounds depending on specification. A complete replacement kit for a standard 1m wide doorway typically costs £50–£100 — far less than the cost of energy loss, pest damage or food safety enforcement from a failed curtain.
