Twin Track PVC Strip Curtain Systems: Maximum Insulation Through Double Curtains

Standard single-layer PVC strip curtains provide good temperature separation for most applications. But for cold rooms, blast freezers and environments where maximum thermal insulation is required, a twin track (double curtain) system provides significantly superior performance by creating an insulating air gap between two layers of PVC strips — similar in principle to double-glazing.

What is a Twin Track System?

Twin track uses two parallel rails mounted one behind the other, each carrying a full run of PVC strips. The curtains are offset — typically 50–100mm apart — creating a dead air gap that provides additional thermal insulation.

Performance Benefits

  • Thermal insulation: reduces heat transfer by 40–60% compared to an equivalent single curtain
  • Air infiltration: vehicles/personnel must push through two separate barriers — significantly reducing air exchange per access cycle
  • Condensation reduction: the inner curtain surface is less cold, reducing condensation on the outer curtain face
  • Pest exclusion: two barrier layers are more effective than one at busy access points

Where Twin Track Systems Are Worth the Investment

  • Blast freezers (-18°C to -35°C) — maximum insulation reduces freezing cycle time and energy cost
  • Cold stores adjacent to ambient areas with high-traffic doorways
  • Pharmaceutical cold rooms where temperature stability is a regulatory requirement
  • IQF tunnels and freezing systems
  • High-value storage where ROI on additional insulation is demonstrably positive

Installation Guide

  1. Mount the first (inner) rail at the standard position inside the door opening
  2. Mount the second (outer) rail parallel to the first, separated by 50–100mm
  3. Hang the first run of strips on the inner rail
  4. Hang the second run on the outer rail, offset by half a strip width from the inner run — so strip joints don't align between layers
  5. Ensure both layers reach to within 10–15mm of the floor

The offset between inner and outer strip positions is critical — aligning the strip joints of both layers would create continuous vertical gaps through both curtains, eliminating much of the twin track advantage.

Strip Specifications for Twin Track Systems

  • Polar grade PVC for both layers in sub-zero environments
  • Food-grade PVC for food storage applications
  • Minimum 3mm thickness — thinner strips may be pushed to one side too easily
  • 100% overlap recommended on both layers for maximum insulation
  • Stainless steel rails for food and cold room environments

Cost-Benefit Analysis

Twin track systems cost approximately double the strip cost plus additional rail hardware compared to single-curtain installations. For a typical blast freezer access point with 20 access cycles per hour during a 10-hour shift, additional energy savings typically pay back the extra capital cost within 12–24 months.
