Forklift truck openings are the most demanding application for any PVC strip curtain. Forks, masts, side-shift carriages, and the truck body itself contact the strips multiple times per shift. Specifying the wrong product in a high-traffic forklift opening means frequent replacement, ongoing disruption, and potential safety issues.

The Challenge of Forklift Traffic

A counterbalanced forklift passes through a strip curtain with forks deflecting strips at the bottom, the mast deflecting strips on entry, and the load profile potentially wider than the truck. In a busy three-shift distribution centre, a single bay opening may see 80–120 forklift transits per 24-hour period.

Heavy-Duty Forklift Strip Curtain Specification

Strip Thickness: 4mm in High-Traffic Openings

4mm strips have greater resistance to tearing from fork tip contact, better elastic recovery after transit, more resistance to permanent deformation, and heavier weight provides better seal after the strip settles back.

Strip Width: 300mm Recommended

300mm reduces individual contact points with the forklift, is less likely to snag on fork tips, and recovers faster to the sealed position. Fewer hanging points per metre means fewer weak points in the installation.

Rail Type: Swivel Hinge

Swivel hinge rail is mandatory for forklift openings. The hinged bracket allows strips to swing fully in the direction of travel and return to position. Fixed-position hook-on rails in high-traffic forklift applications experience repeated shock loading that fatigues the rail and fixings.

Raised Fork Safety

  • Install "LOWER FORKS BEFORE ENTERING" signage on both sides
  • Use yellow warning strips at the top of the curtain as a visual raised-fork warning zone
  • Consider a physical fork height barrier bar above the rail

Split Curtain Design for Pedestrian Safety

Where pedestrians share the same opening as forklifts: use a divided rail with a pedestrian lane (200mm × 2mm yellow strips) to one side and a vehicle lane (300mm × 4mm clear strips). Mark lanes clearly with floor paint on both sides.

Maintenance

  • Inspect weekly for torn, cracked, or deformed strips
  • Replace damaged strips immediately
  • Check rail fixing torque monthly — repeated forklift transit vibration loosens bolts
  • Budget for replacing 30–50% of strips annually in the highest-traffic bays
  • Keep at least 5–10 spare strips on site at all times
