PVC strip curtains don't last forever — but how long they last depends enormously on the environment, traffic level, PVC grade, and maintenance frequency.
Factors That Determine Lifespan
- Traffic level — the most significant factor; forklift contact dramatically reduces lifespan
- UV exposure — direct sunlight yellows and embrittles PVC rapidly; UV-resistant grades last 3–4× longer
- Temperature extremes — cold below -5°C causes standard PVC to stiffen and crack; polar grade resists this
- Chemical exposure — solvents, oils, and strong cleaners accelerate degradation
- Maintenance — regular cleaning and prompt individual replacement extend whole installation life
Expected Lifespans by Application
| Application | Strip Grade | Expected Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian door, ambient, indoor | Standard 2mm clear | 4–7 years |
| Warehouse, pedestrian only | Standard 3mm clear | 4–6 years |
| Warehouse, moderate forklift traffic | 3mm clear | 2–4 years |
| Loading bay, heavy forklift | 4mm clear | 1–3 years |
| Cold room/chiller | 3mm polar grade | 3–5 years |
| Blast freezer (-20°C+) | 4mm polar grade | 2–4 years |
| Outdoor/UV exposed | UV-resistant standard | 3–5 years (vs 12–18 months standard) |
| Spray booth | 3mm clear | 1–2 years |
Signs Your PVC Strips Need Replacing
Cracking — typically starts at strip edges; once started, the strip will fail completely relatively quickly. Replace promptly.
Yellowing — in forklift areas, reduced visibility is a safety issue. Replace when objects on the other side cannot be clearly identified.
Permanent deformation — strips that remain permanently curved after a vehicle impact must be replaced; they create permanent gaps.
Tears and holes — replace immediately in food and cold storage environments.
Planned vs Reactive Replacement
For critical openings (cold stores, food factories, high-traffic loading bays), planned annual replacement of all strips regardless of condition is more cost-effective than reactive replacement. The cost of a full strip replacement is typically £30–£150 — the cost of a food safety non-conformance is orders of magnitude higher.
