PVC strip curtains are one of the most DIY-friendly industrial products available. With standard tools, most openings can be fitted in 30–90 minutes. This step-by-step guide covers the full installation process for hook-on, QuickMount, swivel hinge, and twin track rail systems.
Tools Required
- Tape measure
- Spirit level
- Pencil or chalk line
- Power drill with appropriate bits
- Screwdriver (or drill with screwdriver bit)
- Ladder or step platform (for openings above 2m)
- Appropriate fixings for your mounting surface
Step 1: Measure the Opening Accurately
Measure the clear opening width at the widest point, and the height from the underside of the lintel to the floor. For made-to-measure strips, specify the strip length as the opening height minus 20–30mm for floor clearance (10mm for cold rooms).
Step 2: Mark the Rail Position
Mark fixing positions: maximum 600mm between fixings for most rail types. Use a spirit level to confirm the mounting line is perfectly horizontal.
Step 3: Fix the Rail
Use appropriate fixings for your surface: wall plugs and bolts for masonry, anchor bolts for concrete, self-tapping screws for steel, wood screws for timber. The rail bears the full weight of all strips — don't undersize fixings.
Step 4: Hang the Strips — Hook-On Rail
- Starting from one end, feed the first strip over the end hook
- Add subsequent strips, overlapping each by 50% of the strip width (33% for high-traffic)
- Continue until you reach the other end
- The last strip should overhang by 50–100mm for a good side seal
Step 5: Twin Track Rail — Cold Rooms
Twin track has two channels. Hang the first row in the rear track at twice the strip width spacing. Hang the second row in the front track to fill the gaps. This creates a double-layer curtain with no through gaps.
Step 6: Check and Adjust
- Floor clearance is correct and consistent
- Overlap is even throughout — no gaps
- Strips hang vertically — any twist indicates incorrect hanging
- Curtain seals against the door frame on both sides
Common Mistakes
- Rail not level — strips hang at an angle, creating irregular overlaps
- Insufficient fixings — rail will sag under strip weight
- Strips too short — floor gap allows pest entry and heat loss
- Insufficient overlap — gaps between strips, especially in cold rooms
