Welding Curtains UK — ISO25980 Certified Welding Screens

Welding generates intense ultraviolet (UV), visible and infrared (IR) radiation that can cause permanent eye damage to anyone in the vicinity without adequate protection. UK health and safety law requires that welding operations be screened to protect other workers in the area, making compliant welding curtains a legal necessity.

Our ISO25980 certified welding curtains are manufactured to meet the requirements of ISO 25980:2017 (Welding and Allied Processes — Transparent Welding Curtains, Strips and Screens) and the related BS EN ISO 25980 standard applicable to the UK market.

Understanding ISO25980 & EN1598

Two standards are commonly referenced for welding curtains:

  • ISO 25980:2017 / BS EN ISO 25980 — the current primary standard, replacing EN 1598:2011. Specifies requirements for transparent welding curtains including light transmission, UV/IR filtration and flammability.
  • EN 1598:2011 — the predecessor European standard; our curtains meet both standards.

The standard classifies curtains by their light transmittance shade number. For general MIG/MAG and MMA welding booth screening, Shade 3 to Shade 6 is typical.

Welding Curtain Colour Options

  • Amber/Orange — most widely used; excellent UV and IR filtration with good visibility. Suitable for MIG/MAG, MMA and TIG welding environments.
  • Blue — very high UV filtration; preferred in precision engineering and electronics manufacturing environments.
  • Green — balanced UV/IR filtration; commonly used in laser welding and plasma cutting as well as general welding booths.

Welding Booth Setup

A compliant welding booth screen arrangement typically consists of full-height curtain screens on three sides of the welding position, with PVC strip curtains on the open access side allowing the welder easy access while providing continuous screening when not in use. Curtains should extend to within 300mm of floor level to prevent radiation escape beneath the screen.

UK Regulatory Requirements

The HSE's guidance on eye protection and the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (amended 2022) require appropriate controls to prevent eye injury from welding radiation. Engineering controls (screening curtains) should be implemented before relying on individual PPE alone. Our ISO25980 certified curtains satisfy this engineering control requirement.

All welding curtains are supplied with compatible hanging hardware. Available in strip format (200mm, 300mm widths, 2mm thickness) and as solid panel screens. Free UK delivery on all orders.

Key features of these welding curtains include:

  1. Flame Retardant Material: The curtains are made from flame retardant materials, typically heavy-duty, fire-resistant fabrics such as PVC-coated polyester or vinyl. These materials are designed to resist sparks, molten metal, and flames generated during welding processes.
  2. Customizable Size: The curtains are tailor-made to fit the specific dimensions of the welding area. They can be customized to create partitions or enclosures that protect nearby workers and equipment from welding hazards.
  3. Protection and Containment: Welding curtains are used to shield against sparks, UV radiation, and welding arc light. They also help contain welding fumes, keeping them localized to the welding area and reducing exposure to other parts of the facility.
  4. Grommets and Track Systems: Many welding curtains come with grommets or eyelets along the edges, allowing them to be easily hung from curtain tracks or frames. This enables easy installation, removal, and movement as needed.
  5. Transparency Options: Some welding curtains have transparent sections or windows that allow visibility for safety checks while maintaining protection from welding hazards.
  6. Temperature Resistance: These curtains are designed to withstand high temperatures generated during welding processes without catching fire or melting.
  7. Compliance Standards: Reputable manufacturers ensure that their welding curtains meet relevant safety standards and regulations for fire resistance and welding safety.

Benefits of made-to-measure flame retardant welding curtains:

  • Safety: The primary purpose of these curtains is to protect workers, nearby personnel, and equipment from welding hazards, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.
  • Flexibility: Custom sizing ensures that the curtains fit the specific requirements of the welding area, providing optimal protection and coverage.
  • Mobility: Welding curtains are often portable and can be easily moved or repositioned as needed for different welding projects.
  • Cost-Effective: Investing in welding curtains is a cost-effective safety measure compared to potential costs associated with accidents or damage to equipment.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Using flame retardant welding curtains helps businesses comply with safety regulations and standards in industrial settings.

When purchasing made-to-measure flame retardant welding curtains, it's essential to choose high-quality products from reputable suppliers or manufacturers. Prioritize safety features and compliance with relevant standards to ensure the curtains effectively protect against welding hazards.
