UK farms and agricultural buildings face some of the harshest conditions any PVC strip curtain is asked to endure: UV exposure, wind, mud, livestock contact, extreme cold, and the general wear of rural operations. Despite this, PVC strip curtains are widely used across British farms for good practical and economic reasons.

Why Farms Use PVC Strip Curtains

  • Draught exclusion in livestock buildings — draughts are a leading cause of respiratory disease in cattle, pigs, and poultry
  • Fly and insect control — critical in dairy and poultry environments
  • Temperature maintenance in crop stores — potato, onion, and root vegetable stores require precise temperature management
  • Vehicle access without disruption — tractor and telehandler access without powered roller doors

Specification for Farm Use

Application Strip Width Thickness Grade Rail
Dairy parlour entry 200mm 3mm Ribbed UV-resistant Hook-on or swivel hinge
Pig unit doorway 200mm 4mm Clear or coloured Swivel hinge
Poultry shed entry 200mm 2mm Clear anti-insect Hook-on
Grain store 200mm 3mm Ribbed, UV-resistant Hook-on
Tractor shed/workshop 300mm 4mm Standard clear Swivel hinge
Crop cold store 200mm 3mm Polar grade Twin track

UV Resistance: Critical for Outdoor Farms

Standard PVC yellows and cracks within 12–18 months in direct UK sunlight. UV-stabilised PVC grades maintain clarity and flexibility for 3–5 years in typical UK conditions. Always specify UV-resistant PVC for any south, west, or east-facing farm building opening.

Maintenance on Farms

Power washing is the most practical cleaning method — hold the nozzle at least 500mm from the strip surface. Inspect for tears, UV damage, and insect damage quarterly. Replace individual damaged strips promptly.
